Warm Weather, Happy Plants!

Greetings Gardeners!

What glorious weather we’ve been having lately – bringing the leaves out on our deciduous trees and popping all the wildflowers open. Warm nights really make a difference for plants as they establish themselves and the forecast looks good for that!

Watering Tips

In this warm weather, I’m needing to water the greenhouses almost everyday – the small sized containers of the nursery plants don’t hold much moisture, especially as the plants become more rooted. There is no danger of over-watering in these temperatures! Containers want to be watered when the top one to two inches of soil are dry. It is always better to water deeply less frequently, rather than watering a little bit everyday. Watering deeply encourages roots to move down, rather than staying up near the top of the container. Deeper roots means stronger plants, giving the plant the resilience to weather adverse conditions. The same principle applies to raised beds and in-ground gardens. Not only do deeper roots produce stronger plants, but they also allow the plants to access more nutrients. If a container becomes droughted, it is usually possible to recover it: give it a good soak and place it in the shade, on a tray that will hold water, so it can soak the excess water up. It will perk up surprisingly quickly and can then be moved back into the sun.

Ready this Weekend

More flowers, veggies and herbs! Fennel, kale, cukes and zukes are a few of the veggies that are ready. Many more flowers, including evening-scented stock, snapdragons, larkspur and sunflowers. For the herbs, basil, sweet marjoram and summer savoury are ready to go. Plus everything else, of course!

The nursery is located at 103121 Alaska Highway, 10 mins west of Haines Junction, just past Bear Creek, on the right. Watch for the sandwich board! Open Fridays 2pm-7pm, Saturdays and Sundays 10am-4pm. See you there!
